All of the resources listed below are websites/resources we’ve used to find cheap flights while traveling the world full-time! The links below are affiliate links, which means that we’ll get a small commission if you click through the link and make a purchase. We’re hoping that you’ll use you these links anytime you need to make a purchase! These small commissions help us stay on the road longer, which means we’ll be able to upload more vlogs 🙂 We would never recommend anything we don’t personally use and think is valuable!
1. Frequent Flyer Miles
Using frequent flyers is our favorite way to book flights! Before leaving we saved up over 1.8 million miles and points. We’ve used these frequent flyer miles to fly around the world for pennies on the dollar. Our trip wouldn’t have been possible with the frequent flyer miles we saved up!
After answering countless questions about my crazy travel hacking hobby, I finally sat down and put everything I know about earning and redeeming frequent flyer miles into one online course. My goal is to take what I’ve learned over the last four years and teach it to you in a practical way in only 30 days!
You can either keep paying for flights like everyone else, or you can learn the art of travel hacking and join the elite few who are flying around the world (sometimes in business class) for pennies on the dollar!
2. Mistake Fares & Short Term Flight Deals
Mistake fares and short flight deals work best for the opportunistic traveler because you have to be willing to go where the deal takes you within a certain frame. If you want to go to a specific place at a specific time, chances are these options won’t be a good fit for you.
For those of you who have a little flexibility, mistake fares and short-term flight deals could be a game changer for you! They were for us! Below are the mistake fares that Kara and I have booked.
U.S. to South Africa for $300
U.S. to Europe & Thailand for $225
Brazil to Hong Kong in BUSINESS CLASS for $700
After booking my first mistake fare, I become obsessed with making sure I found every mistake fare available. I developed a great system for finding and booking mistakes fares, and recently I decided to share my strategy in my new book The Mistake Fare Manual.
The Mistake Fare Manual is meant to be the ultimate guide to finding and booking mistake fares. If you’re an opportunistic traveler, and you want to learn how to book dirt cheap flights (when available), I highly recommend checking out my new book.
Since mistake fares and short-term flight deals are time sensitive, I developed a system for sending notifications straight to my phone as soon as these flight deals are posted online. You can have 6 months of my flight deal notifications for free when you buy the book.
You can also sign up for the flight deal notifications without buying the book. You may not have the knowledge you need to find and book a great mistake fare, but you can take advantage of the 20+ short term flight deals that will be sent to your phone each day.
Skyscanner (see below) was my go to flight search engine until an Australian guy told me about Momondo while trekking to Everest Base Camp. I tested out Momondo the next chance I got, and now I’m hooked. I personally think Momondo is the best flight search engine on the web because it includes a lot of budget airlines that other search engines don’t include. It also combines multiple budget airlines to get you to your destination as cheaply as possible.
If you’re looking for the cheapest flight possible, Momondo is the flight search engine you should be using! If you’d like to give us a commission for your next flight purchase through Momondo, please start your flight search using the link below.
I used Skyscanner for years to search for flights. I usually check Skyscanner in addition to Momondo when I search for a flight, just to make sure I’m not missing anything.
One feature that I still use on Skyscanner is the “Whole Month” pricing feature. It allows you to compare prices across a whole month. Since Kara and I have a flexible schedule, this feature is really handy! You can access this feature by hovering over the departure date. Below is a screen shot so you can see exactly what I’m talking about. This feature is a little hidden if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
